This document aims to be the broadest available sourcebook of forteana, that being, things of a strange nature (occult, paranormal, extraterrestrial, conspiratorial, folkloric, mythological, religious, pseudoscientific, or in any other way out of the ordinary). It is the result of pouring over countless such books in physical and digital formats, and compiling together every single weird topic found within them into one single digital directory, easily searcheable and in alphanumerical order. The navigation bar above will take you to the start of the section for each corresponding glyph. To the left, you will find a search bar, to make it easier for users to find what they are after, even if they remember it by a different name to what is listed here. Beneath the search bar is an image and 3D model gallery. Thumbnails of attachments below certain entries can be clicked on to have said attachment be displayed in the gallery.

Of course, this project is still in it's inception, so entries will be added slowly as time goes on. The end goal of @forteana_directory is to be a living sourcebook of weirdness, growing and expanding with the field of forteana, giving users a starter in their investigations on each and every fortean topic. The speculated 'final' (if such a word even applies to a project of this sort) number of entries will be in the tens of thousands. I seek to write them by hand, as to confer a level of personality and authenticity that simply would be impossible with AI. I also will try to avoid copying the entries made on these topics in other works so it may be considered something truly original. This means the growth of @forteana_directory may be slower than some may desire. Such is life.

    33rd Degree

    • The 33rd degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, often written as '33°' is the highest title a mason under AASR can achieve. The official name for the 33° is 'Sovereign Grand Inspector General' (alternatively 'Inspector General' or 'Inspector General Honorary'). This denotes the owner of the title as an Honorary inspector general of the Supreme Council.
    • Becoming an Inspector General in the Scottish Rite requires active involvement and dedication to one's lodge, community, and rite for one to obtain. This is officially the highest title that can be achieved in the Scottish Rite with the exception of Grand Cross.
    • Upon achieving the title of Inspector General, freemasons are granted a ring in the form of a gold band with a black triangle, inside of which the number 33 is inscribed. Alongside this, they receive the a white Scottish Rite cap bearing a red double cross, symbol of the Inspector General title.
    • Many theories exist as to why the 33° is the highest title a freemason could achieve, most of which stemming from the Christian origins of the Scottish Rite. The age at which Jesus Christ was crucified is 33, and as such, many take that to be the origin of the number, with the Trinity serving as a reinforcement of that choice. However its concrete origins seem to be basked in mystery, with the Scottish Rite originally having only 25 degrees, and seven additional ones being added with the formalization of the Grand Constitution of the rite on the 1st of May 1786 by Frederick, King of Prussia. With this he became the first 33° member of the rite, with the title of 'First Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council', and his double headed eagle emblem became adopted as symbol of the 32nd and 33rd degree. On his deathbed, in August of the same year, as no successor has been appointed, King Frederick declared the members of the Supreme Council to now be members of the 33°, and confered them rights to elevate other of their bretheren to the same title, given above and beyond dedication to the fraternity.

    8800 Blue Lick Road

    • The property at the address of 8800 Blue Lick Road in Louisville, Kentucky became a topic of conversation for adepts of strangeness around October of 2020, when Internet adventures found the 3D walktrhough for it on Zoopla, a major online real estate agency. While it appears relatively large from the outside, it's true scale can only be comprehended by exploring said 3D walkthrough. It is comprised of a labyrinth of shelves and hallways, with multiple bathrooms and even what appears to be a babptism pool. This has led some to speculate that perhaps the property used to serve as a church, and while its history is unclear, the owners at the time the walkthrough was made were certainly not a religious institution.
    • The house appears to be cluttered with shelves upon shelves of DVDs and other trinkets, leading explorers to belive the owners at the time may have either partaken in the second hand sale of merchandise, or had a severe hoarding problem. The re-seller theory seems to hold some truth, as a room contained multiple machines for polishing optical media discs. Other sections of the house were dedicated to storing pornographic films.
    • Internet users made have explored and disected each and every corner of the 8800 Blue Lick Road, with some even attempting to speedrun reaching the aforementioned baptism pool.
    • While the original walkthrough of the house has been removed from the various real estate websites it was made available through, ports of it have been created by users for both Gmod and VRChat as a means to continue exploration of the property.

    • "Alien Big Cats", or "Anomalous Big Cats". In Britain may be refered to as "British Big Cats". Also refered to as "Phantom Cats".
    • Large cats spotted in the wild outside their native range. There have been hundreds of sightings across continental Europe, the British Isles, Australia, and New Zealand. For Britain, it's believed this is a result of The Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, which led to a vast amount of big cats being released into the wild, creating breeding populations in some areas. Due to remains being seldom spotted, some speculate a more supernatural origin to big cat sightings, seeing them more as something akin to fairies, or ultraterestrials.

    Babushka Lady, The

    • Romanisation of the Russian 'бабушка' meaning grandmother.
    • At the assassination of John F. Kennedy, a woman wearing a Russian-style headscarf seen photographing (or at least appearing to be doing so) the crime as it was unfolding. What was seen as odd was her calm demeanour during the whole event, which led some to believe she may have been implicated in the plot. The FBI put out a request for her to come forward and share the photos taken during the event (as she was quite close to it, and the photos would provide a new angle of the assassination) but she never showed up.
    • In 1970, a woman came forth claiming to be the Babushka Lady. Her name was Beverly Oliver, and she stated she recorded the assassination on Super 8 film. However she goes on to state that said film is no longer in her possession, having it handed to 2 men claiming to be from the FBI. As such this claim cannot be confirmed or denied. Beverly would have been 17 at the time of the incident.
    • At a 1994 public hearing on the assassination, a report was recounted from a then Kodak Dallas office executive. According to him, a brunette woman in her early 30s (suspected of being the Babushka Lady) took in a roll of film to be processed shortly after the assassination, but the photos contained on the roll were "virtually useless".

    Ball Lightning

    Banshee

    • From the old Irish "ben síde" meaning "fairy mound woman".
    • A supernatural creature of Gaelic folklore. In many tales, she takes the form of an old woman, screaming and crying in the middle of the night. Those who hear her cries are said to have a death in their family soon to happen. In other cases it may the the listener himself who ends up dead.
    • Some variations of the banshee myth say that instead of crying, the banshee will walk under the window of people soon to die.
    • The Irish believe that banshees only warn families of pure Irish blood. Perhaps a post-rational Irish government could find it wise to implement the banshee in their citizenship tests.
    • The Welsh folk tell similar tales surrounding the Rhibyn Witch.

    Daimon

    • From the Greek δαίμων [daimōn], and the Latin daemon. From the root "da-" (daiesthai) meaning "to divide" and "-mon" suffix denoting an agent noun.
    • Also known as "daemon". Often defined as a lesser deity, or a guiding spirit. Originating from Greek mythology. A hand of fate. Can be further divided into ἀγαθοδαίμων [agathodaímōn] (noble spirit), and κακοδαίμων [kakodaímōn] (malevolent spirit). Similar to the جِنّ [djinn] in Arabic belief. More recently re-adopted in an effort to distinguish between these types of spirits and the Christian understanding of "demon". Both words have the same origin.

    Elixir of Life

    • Also known as "elixir vitae" in Latin.
    • The substance or process believed by the ancients to grant the user never-ending life, health, and youth. The myth appears in many cultures, sometimes entirely disconnected from each other by both time and space. In many traditions it is believed to be a liquid the person must drink, but that is not exclusively the case.
    • In the Epic of Gilgamesh [Tablet XI], after Enkidu's death, Gilgamesh begins to fear his own demise. Utanapishtim, the ancestor of Gilgamesh, who has saved his people from The Flood and achieved immortality, guides Gilgamesh in this quest. Utanapishtim informs him of a plant at the bottom of the sea in Dilmun, with thorns like that of a rose, which will make any man that consumes of it young again. Gilgamesh opens a conduit (portal??) to the sea, ties stones to his feet, and dives to get the plant, but is beaten to it by a serpent.
    • In Chinese tradition, the the elixir takes the form of "long-lasting stones" such as Jade, Haematite, or Cinnabar, crushed down with a mortar and pestle and consumed. Gold was believed to have similar properties, however at times that would be combined with other elements and turned into a liquid gold.
    • In Europe, alchemists have worked tirelessly to create the Philosopher's Stone. It will happen any day now, trust me. Just approve $12Bln. more to the Wizard's Legion and this time I'm certain we'll have a draft of a working prototype. One alchemist claiming to be Nicholas Flammel (a French scrivener from the 14th century) claimed in the 1612 work The Exposition of the Hieroglyphical Figures (refering to the strange illustrations comissioned by Flammel during his historical life to be engraved on the arch of the St. Innocents Church Yard) than he learned how to create the Philosopher's Stone, calling it "Projection Powder".

    High Strangeness

    • Coined by Dr. John Allen Hynek, the astronomer assigned by the US Air Force as a scientific consultant on Project Blue Book (then turned ufologist), in his 1972 book The UFO Experience.
    • It refers to any high intensity tied collection of events of an unexplainable nature. Originally as part of a "strangeness" rating system employed by Hynek throughout his book, cases where UFO witnesses would experience paranormal events (possessions, poltergeist activity, psychic activity) or other effects of an altered reality, would receive a high strangeness grade. Over the course of his research on the topic, high strangeness events led Hynek to believe that Extradimensional Intelligence [EDI] is a more rational explanation for the UFO phenomenon.

    Palmistry

    • Also known as palm reading, chiromancy, chirology or cheirology.
    • It is the study of fortune-telling using the grooves of the hand. Palmistry is an ancient technique, with roots all over Eurasia. It had a resurgence during the Renaissance, and another in the Victorian Era, the latest being spurred on by figures such as Captain Casimir Stanislas D'Arpentigny and Cheiro.

    Project Blue Book

    • Named after the blue booklets issued to students during tests by some universities, as Captain Edward J. Ruppelt felt high ranking officers were treating the project as a final exam to prove if UFOs were a threat to national security or not.
    • Codename for the US Air Force research commission into UFOs from March 1952 to December 1969. It's the successor to Project Sign and Project Grudge.
    • Possibly the most spoken about research project into unidentified flying objects, and as such a long and detailed (and highly contested) history of the project exists. Upon its completion the USAF provided the following summary:
      1. No UFO reported, investigated, and evaluated by the Air Force was ever an indication of threat to our national security;
      2. There was no evidence submitted to or discovered by the Air Force that sightings categorized as "unidentified" represented technological developments or principles beyond the range of modern scientific knowledge; and
      3. There was no evidence indicating that sightings categorized as "unidentified" were extraterrestrial vehicles
    • Despite this, many researchers and consultants on the project, such as Dr. John Allen Hynek, turned from skeptics to ufologists throughout their work on Project Blue Book.
    • It has since been declassified.

    Ultraterrestrial Hypothesis

    • Named in relation to extraterrestrials to denote them being not external to Earth. Also referred to as Extradimensional Intelligence [EDI].
    • Coined by John Keel, in his book UFOs: Operation Trojan Horse, the ultraterrestrial hypothesis aims to be a grand unifying theory of high strangeness. In noticing that, often, encounters with UFOs and those that pilot them tend to be accompanied by strange dreams and poltergeist activity, and that UFO activity appears strangely similar to things such as fairy interactions (see similarities between crop circle and fairy ring beliefs) and the 1897 Great Airship Mystery, Keel began to stipulate that UFO activity may not be of extraterrestrial origin, but may instead be originating on Earth, by creatures which inhabit a dimension different to us, but which can show themselves to us at will. Considered to be trickster entities. They tend to take a shape in accordance with the current human belief paradigm. Throughout history may have appeared as demons, angels, fairies, ghosts, vampires, gnomes, mystery airships, UFOs/aliens, cryptids, ABCs, ball lightning, etc. etc.
