The early history of the Internet, and general computing in the decade right before it is driven by the counter-culture of the time. Hackers, phreakers, crackers, cyber punks, free speech fighters, geeks, nerds, psychonauts. All these people shaped what the Internet ended up being. A lot of the communications between them happened at conventions, on early Usenet boards, and internal university emails. Most of these are lost to time or too dense to find much of interest. But the highlights of the culture and advancements of these people have been recorded in (what has been a staple of the counter-culture for a while) zines, some of which going on to become officially published magazines into the current day. The following is a collection of the various zines and magazines of this era, in their myriad forms, with the totality of issues which could be recovered by yours truly. Put on some Grateful Dead, kick back, and read a piece of computing history.
A short disclaimer: I do not endorse the content of these publications. Counter Culture at the time was very wild, violent, and packed to the brim with drugs and degeneracy. A lot of these publications were also made at a time when being against Christianity was "cool" and "rebelious". While that era is thankfully long gone, part of that mindset remains in some people. The distribution of these materials here is not meant to serve as endorsement of it. It is purely provided as a form of archival, with the purpose of providing a look into the culture of computing in the 80s and 90s, as well as a glimpse into the mind of the early cyber punks.
The following zines are published after the end of the world (and the beginning of the new one) in 2012. In recent days the zine has been seen to re-surface, after a decade or so simmering in the depths. With the advancements in design, technology, and growth of online communities, this makes this new era of zines shine in a completely new light.
Many of these are still in print, so if you do enjoy these, please do go support the creators.
